Cats Top Spikes 5-2
STATE COLLEGE, PA—Cole White extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 13, but the State College Spikes fell to the Tri-City ValleyCats, 5-2, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
White’s two hits in his first two at-bats gave him the third-longest hit streak in the New York-Penn League. Jeremy Farrell also produced a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
State College (7-21) fell behind in the second when Phil Disher led off with his sixth home run of the season. Tri-City (11-18) added another run in the second, and one each in the third and fifth, before completing their scoring with a David Flores solo home run.
Butch Biela doubled to extend his own hitting streak to six games, and scored on a Quincy Latimore groundout. Latimore also tripled to center field in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch.
3,109 fans were in attendance at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight to see the Spikes try for a valiant comeback in the late innings. After putting runners on second and third with one out in the eighth, though, Jose Duran struck out Ciro Rosero and elicted a Latimore ground out to get out of the jam.
Wilson Ortiz (0-2) started for the Spikes and drew the loss. Ortiz went four innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out two. Yoffri Martinez finished the game for State College, lowering his ERA to 0.56 with three scoreless innings and racking up five strikeouts.
Ashton Mowdy (4-1) got the win for Tri-City with 2.1 innings of one-hit scoreless relief. Mike Hacker picked up his fourth save in four tries with a scoreless ninth inning for the ValleyCats.
Friday night, the Spikes and ValleyCats conclude their three-game series with a 7:05 game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. For the Spikes, it will be right-hander Ryan Kelly (0-1) starting on the mound. Kelly went two scoreless innings to start a shutout win for the Spikes in Brooklyn on Saturday in his last outing.
Tri-City counters with Shane Wolf (0-1) on the hill. Wolf has a 2.86 ERA on the year, and has struck out 19 batters in 22 innings, while only allowing three walks.
The Spikes will wear special hemp jerseys to commemorate the first Going Green Night of 2008, sponsored by Wildlife for Everyone. During the game, fans can participate in the Jersey-off-the-Back Auction and bid on their favorite Spike’s jersey. After the game, each player will personally autograph and present the jersey to each winner.
