TROY, N.Y.—In addition to an action packed game on Wednesday night; fans were also treated to a pre-game ceremony celebrating United States veterans as well as a post-game fireworks display. As part of the Tri-City ValleyCats Veterans Night celebration, American veterans were given a free ticket to tonight’s match up between the ‘Cats and the Jamestown Jammers and were honored on the field before the game in front of a crowd of 4,150. After a back-and-forth game, the ValleyCats were defeated 5-3.
‘Cats starting pitcher Robert Bono had a strong outing, going five innings and giving up two runs. The right-hander also struck out two and left the game with a one-run lead. However, Jamestown tied the game at three in the eighth on an RBI by Ernie Banks. The Jammers took the lead, and ultimately the win, in the ninth inning with back-to-back home runs from Mitch MacDonald and Miguel Fermin.
ValleyCats leftfielder J.B. Shuck turned in an impressive defensive game for Tri-City. In the second inning, Shuck made a fantastic diving catch off a line drive by Mitch MacDonald. Then in the sixth, Shuck threw a strike from leftfield to second baseman Andy Simunic who tagged out Jammers runner Lonnie Lechelt.
David Duncan will take the mound for the ValleyCats tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Jamestown. Tomorrow is U.S. Army night at “The Joe” and troops who present identification at the box office will have free admission. A fireworks display will follow the game.
