Schenectady N.Y. - The Albany Metro Mallers looked to tighten the screws in preparation for their N.F.A opener by taking on the Hudson Valley Cowboys Saturday night. Union College was the setting as the Mallers trounced the Cowboys 42-20.
Quarterback Scott Lawson looked sharp going 23 of 37 319 yards and 4 touchdowns. However the play of the game was Macio “A.I.” Clinton who had an electrifying 72 yard punt return. It’s too bad the Mallers don’t get some sort of TV game coverage because this play would’ve been a top ten on ESPN’s sportcenter. It would be remiss if I didn’t mention Carson Johnson and Terry Cumberbatch who provided some devastating blocks that paved the way for Clinton to reach the end zone.
Culture Branch hauled in two of Lawson’s four touchdown passes while Jesse Bennett and Macio Clinton grabbed the other two. It should be mentioned that Branch had a solid game despite the fact his wisdom teeth were taken out on Thursday. Kicker Brian Bagstad connected on 2 field goals and 4 extra points.
The defense was solid even though they were short handed. Maller new comer Shane Sportman led the way with 2 sacks. CB Carson Johnson continues his ball hawking with another interception making it 4 in two games. LB John Sausville had a first quarter fumble recovery and David Jenkins was credited with a third quarter safety. Rookie CB C.J. Tarver contributed with a second quarter interception. Even though the Mallers gave up 20 points the majority came in fourth quarter garbage time.
The Metro Mallers open their inaugural N.F.A season on Saturday July 12th versus the Troy Fighting Irish, 7pm at Bleecker Stadium.
On the line will be the first edition of the Capital Region Sports.com Cup.
